Artoo-Deetoo is perhaps the most useful and courageous droid the Star Wars galaxy has ever known. Though he is an astromech droid by design, he far exceeds his normal programmed duties of assisting with navigation on starships. In fact, R2-D2 spends more time out of ships than in them. Throughout the entire series, Artoo has saved many a good soul from death. The first instance was in Episode I when we first meet R2-D2. He saves Padme Amidala's ship form sure destruction by the Trade Federation's blockade by repairing the Royal Crusier's deflector shield just in time. He saves Padme again in Episode II when she is about to become melted down in the Genosian battle droid factory. I'm sure there will be more of his heroics in Episode III. However, Artoo is surely best known for his contributions to the Rebellion in the last three films. It was R2-D2 who hid the top secret Death Star battle plans within in his memory banks when Princess Leia was captured by Darth Vader. He also delivered a crucial message to Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine which allowed her to escape when Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker came to save her. Artoo then repairs Luke's X-Wing starfighter during the Battle of Yavin, allowing Luke to destroy the Death Star. R2 accompanies Luke to Dagobah where the duo encounters the Jedi Master, Yoda. R2-D2 is often accompanied by C-3PO, a protocol droid. This is the case when the two deliver a message to Jabba the Hutt alerting him the Luke Skywalker wants his friend Han Solo back in Return of the Jedi. Unfotunately, Artoo ends up serving drinks on Jabba's Sail Barge. However, he saves Luke from near death when he launches his lightsaber to him, allowing Luke to destroy the Sail Barge and free his friends. Artoo connects to many computers around the galaxy, as skill which proves useful in many situations. However, despite R2-D2's many services to the Rebellion and Jedi Knights, perhaps his most shining achivement is the humor that he provides along with his partner C-3PO. Without his wit and attitude, the series would just not be the same.
