The lanspeeder is pictured here in the city of Mos Eisley on Tatooine.  This particular one is the XP-34 landpeeder that Luke Skywalker is piloting.  It moves by means of a repulsorlift engine that allows it to hover above the ground.  It is used mainly for transport and recreation.  Or in Luke Skywalker's case, for racing .  It has no weapons or shields or anything seeing as it is for recreation.  Luke ended up having to sell his landspeeder so he and Obi-Wan Kenobi could pay Han Solo to take them to Alderaan.
