The X-Wing is the most widely used fighter in the Rebel fleet.  It has excellent speed, handling, weapons, and handling.  Overall it is a well balanced ship that many pilots prefer over the slower Y-Wing.  Luke Skywalker flew in an X-Wing when he destroyed he Death Star with a pair of proton torpedos.  The X-Wing is armed with four laser cannons, positioned on the tips of each wing.  The wings are in fact called S-foils and are pictured closed above.  When in a battle the S-foils open to form an "X" shape, hence the name X-Wing.  The X-wing also has a pair of proteon torpedo launchers which Luke used to destroy the first Death Star.  The X-Wing has appeared in Episodes IV, V, and VI and is a major symbol of the Rebel Alliance.
