The Y-Wing is an older fighter, but still forms a large part of the Rebel Alliance's fleet.  It is many times used as a bomber, due to its low speed.  It makes up for its sluggishness by having heavy armor.  The Y-Wing can take quite a beating and still keep on truckin'.  It is armed with two laser cannons on the fron of the cockpit part of the ship.  It is also armed with two ion cannons on the top of the cokpit, directly above the pilot.  Ion cannons differ from laser cannons because instead of destroying a ship they disable it, leaving it a sitting duck in the heat of battle.  They ship can then be captured or destroyed easily.  Finally, the Y-Wing also has two prton torpedo launchers for those bigger targets.  It has appeared in Episode IV and VI and played a major role in the Battle of Yavin.
